Bassango by Mathieu Lussier (Canada) *English Version.

Hi everyone! Today we arrive in the city of Montreal, a beautiful place in Canada that connects us with France and Argentina in a melody called Bassango by Mathieu Lussier. 💃

Today our trip unites us in a dance that connects the north with the south of our continent, ¨Bassango¨ is a subtle and elegant piece, this music describes the typical Dandi in Paris and Buenos Aires sitting in the cafe waiting for the call of the strings to begin the dance with a slow melody and accompanied by the continuous rhythm of the double bass, typical of 20th century.

The migration of Europeans to Argentina mixes these two continents in a rhythm that is formed by many more currents of dances but that in the end tango is the maximum expression, the bassoon sings this melody that begins the strings slowly and deliberately with tone nostalgic that develops little by little with some subtle changes in the harmony that is always accompanied by a constant rhythm of the strings until the end.

In conclusion, for me Bassango is a beautiful tribute that the composer makes to his French colony, he teaches us a bit of the history of Montréal represented in the Dandyism of the 20th century and the connection with Argentinian tango.

Bassango is a piece with different versions: for bassoon, bassoon, and piano quartet, as there is also a version recorded with bandoneon, harpsichord, bassoon; and finally this version that we hear today with string accompaniment, It was created for the recording of the album ¨Bacchanale¨ by Bassoonist Nadina Mackie Jackson, this piece was awarded third place as ¨Best Contemporary Song¨ in 2009 at the awards. ¨Just Plains Folks¨ and was performed by Maestra Nadina Jackson at the awards ceremony in Nashville.
