"Tierra Sagrada" for Bassoon and Orchestra by Nelson Vinot (Chile) *English Version.

Hit play before reading!

Hi everyone, today we will travel to Araucana, Chile visiting the Mapuche culture, and amidst songs to the God "Pillan", we listen to "Tierra Sagrada" for Bassoon and Orchestra by the bassoonist and composer Nelson Vinot.

The work "Tierra Sagrada" is structured in three parts, the first part is called the "Choique Purrum" which for the Mapuche culture means Religious Magic Dance and represents the movement of the birds that inhabit the region; The bassoon begins the piece with a call simulating the "Trutuca" (Instrument used by the Mapuches as a signal from a distance or war cry), after the bassoon's call to the orchestra, it appears as part of the work the intervention of a short poem that evokes reflection and gratitude for everything that surrounds us, little by little a beautiful bassoon cadence develops along with the poem and accompanied by the sound of the "Kultrún" (small wooden timpani played by the Mapuche shamans), create an energetic ceremonial atmosphere, achieving the effect of the meaning of "Choique Purrum".

"Trafui" (meeting place or situation), this second movement begins with a short poem in the Mapuche language called "Mapudungu" which means "language of the earth", a poem that evokes its richness; the strings begin with a great slow introduction giving way to the expressive intervention of the bassoon, surprisingly the sound of a mouth harp appears that together with the orchestra make a beautiful introduction to a calm song on the language "Mapudungu"; the composer describes "Trafui" as a movement in which he wants to highlight the beauty of "Arauco" (Mapuche region) "It is a contemplation of the place where the Mapuches live".

"Weichafe" (Warrior) is the third movement that begins with a beautiful poem that speaks of "Epu Newen" that has as meaning "Two forces" and responds to the fusion between the tangible and the intangible. "Weichafe" is a movement full of force, the rhythm in the orchestra is very marked, taking the rhythm of traditional music; the bassoon in this movement intervenes in a very virtuous way with a slightly more jazzy melody in combination with the traditional rhythms of Chile.

Poetry once again makes intervention by letting us know the origin of the "Tierra Sagrada" that says "In a territory recovered and defended with history and almost dead in its arms, the legend of the last warriors "Tierra Sagrada" Kalfu Mapu rides" (Territory blue, is a philosophical, cultural and spiritual description of the Mapuche worldview), an incredible cadence of the bassoon develops almost at the end of the work simulating the call of the "Trutuca" (Battle Cry) with great virtuosity and with a demanding level technically using resources such as frullato and multiphonics together with the orchestra, the movement is energetically coming to an end, thus culminating the war cry.

In conclusion "Tierra Sagrada" is a very original work that tells us in 26 minutes the history of the Mapuche culture, with great technical demand for the orchestra and the soloist, it is a novel work with different resources such as song and poetry, thus mixing two artistic expressions into one, the use of typical instruments of the Mapuche culture is also admirable.

I want to exalt the work of the composer and bassoonist Nelson Vinot for his great work so demanding and beautiful at the same time, without a doubt it is a great tribute to the Mapuche culture.

"Tierra Sagrada" was written in 2017 and premiered in 2018 with the National Symphony Orchestra of Chile. The work has the participation of Rocio Rojas Monsalve in the narration, solo voice, and mouth harp; as well as poems by Absalón Opazo M, and the text of the song Tierra Sagrada by Nelson Vinot.
