Sonata for Bassoon and Piano - Pedro Sarmiento (Colombia) * English version.

Hello friends! Today we begin this musical travel around the American continent, starting from our first destination which is Colombia with the Sonata for Bassoon and Piano by the Composer Pedro Sarmiento.
What a beautiful discovery to find this sonata little performed worldwide, a peaceful piece that evokes calm, the first Allegro movement, begins with a marching rhythm that is repeated on the bassoon and on the piano voice throughout the movement, but at the same time, a beautiful melody developed by the bassoon is mixed, we can hear in this allegro, a little the influence of Paul Hindemith's sonata for bassoon and piano. The second movement is a contrasting Adagio to the previous rhythmic allegro, this movement begins with a mysterious melody on the piano, at first in a simple way, but as the piano progresses little by little its intensity increase, we also hear that it begin to add dissonant elements in the chords which for the listener becomes a more complex experience than at the beginning of the movement until the development of that introduction to the sonata in a very virtuous way by the piano, the bassoon enters with a mysterious theme as well that the piano gradually becomes a melody that is too expressive and cantabile, but always with complex harmonic elements in the melody of the piano. And we reached the energetic end by resuming the rhythmic marching style, but with a conclusion of a mixture of themes from the first and second movements, although contrasting, having a great development in the end.
Coming to a conclusion, it is an incredible sonata with a great work well developed by the composer and a magnificent interpretation by the bassoonist and pianist, this sonata was created in 2003 and is included in the record series ¨Portraits of a Composer ¨ from the Bank of the Republic of Colombia, and it was dedicated to the chamber music of Mr. Sarmiento.
